PROVENANCE
From an Important Private Collection, Mumbai

The subject matter of this miniature is Dana-Lila or demanding a toll. Krishna, known for his mischievous antics, is seen stopping the village milkmaids who are enroute from the forest. He threatens to break their earthen pots unless they agree to kiss him. The women try to escape by offering milk instead. The artist has re-created the landscape of Vrindavan with a large tree branch peeping in the background and the Yamuna river flowing at the bottom of the work in a subtle silver colour. This complements well with the vibrant and colourful attire of the village folk. The facial features, like the long curved eyes, kiss curls, and long flowy garments all point to the Jodhpur School.
